Cumberland River Breakwater Removal

Tiny's Demolition & Recycling managed a full breakwater block removal project on the Cumberland River in Nashville, Tennessee, taking responsibility for every phase of the work from initial site preparation through final cleanup. The five day operation required a unique mix of land and water based work uncommon to most demolition jobs, calling on the team's ability to adapt its approach to a live river environment.

Site prep began with clearing vegetation using machetes and chainsaws to establish clear access to the riverbank. The team then applied marine grade adhesive and reinforced poly sheeting to the breakwaters to prevent foam escape during removal, a critical step in keeping the operation environmentally sound. Using manual labor, levers, and winches, crews systematically reintroduced the breakwaters into the river, working north to south to maintain full control and ensure no block escaped downstream.

Boat crews then transported the breakwaters 2.6 miles downstream, with safety measures maintained throughout the entire operation. Coordination with local parks officials allowed the team to safely disconnect shore power before completing the final removal by crane, moving the breakwaters to a designated ramp for offloading. Public safety remained a priority from start to finish, with the team installing fencing and warning signage while coordinating restricted access with nearby paddleboard and kayak operators.
