Historic Government Building Demolition

Tiny's Demolition & Recycling took on the extensive demolition of a historic government building in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, a project spanning more than 200,000 square feet with preservation woven into every step of the process. Given the site's historical significance, the primary challenge was clear from day one: remove what needed to come out while protecting the architectural and historical elements that make the building irreplaceable.

The team implemented rigorous protective measures around salvaged historic items, keeping their integrity intact throughout the entire demolition sequence. Specialized equipment played a major role in the approach, including Brokk 100 demolition robots, ride on skid steers, conveyors, and a carrydeck crane fitted with a dump hopper for efficient debris handling. Ecovolves were also used to further streamline debris management across the site.

Among the most technical aspects of the project, crews removed four levels of concrete slab to restore the original lightwell at the center of the building's north wing and extended an elevator shaft by removing additional concrete slabs. The team also addressed heaving slab conditions in the museum areas, resolving structural issues while protecting the historical value of the space.

Coordination was constant throughout the project, with Tiny's working alongside plumbers, HVAC specialists, electricians, roofers, restoration experts, concrete professionals, structural steel fabricators, and stone masons to keep the work moving as a cohesive, high quality effort. The result set the stage for the next phase of construction, reflecting Tiny's ability to balance historic preservation with complex structural demolition on one of Nashville's most significant buildings.
